Hanging out with friends in Friendswood, TX

This week we have a great featured build. The build took place in Friendswood, TX just South of Houston and turned out beautiful. This family put themselves through the “ringer” by taking on some of the work themselves, and it paid off. They were able to save some money in the build while getting some exercise. More importantly, they have extra appreciation for the build, and can take pride in the results.

THE DREAM:

They started out as most do, researching types of pools and local builders. After much research, and eight different quotes, they chose a builder. The decision was based on reputation and cost. The outcome was a smooth build process, while saving $25,000 in the process!

STARTING OUT:

When the builder showed up in shorts and flip-flops, they were skeptical. As it turned out, the builder had a PhD and spent many years in finance. The builder decided to retire the calculator for a shovel, and did a fantastic job on the pool.

The pool builder asked that they just use a garden hose to outline the general shape of the pool and describe the vision. The price was right, allowing them to allocate budget towards an outdoor fireplace, larger decking, and a sprinkler system. The builder also suggested to make the pool larger, and add a tanning ledge, so the size of the pool would not be dwarfed by the large backyard. To sweeten the deal, the builder upgraded the size of the pool and added the tanning ledge at no additional cost!

Here’s the Breakdown:

22’X42’ Gunite Freeform 25K Gal, 10’X12’ Spa

Diamond-Brite Midnight Blue, 1800sq. ft Kool Deck

Pentair Easy-Touch 8
2-2hp Pentair Pumps
500lb Sand Filter
400K BTU Pentair heater

The shape looked great, and the tanning ledge on the left was a great addition!

The Gunite was finished with Diamond-Brite in Midnight Blue. The decking also turned out great, and was completed in just 17 days!

After the build was complete, they decided to allocate some of the excess budget for other amenities.

They saved a lot of money by purchasing an older floor model fireplace found at a local rock company. The fireplace is a Belgard and is part of the Bristol series.

The outdoor kitchen was the catalyst for the whole backyard project and looks like a perfect set-up for entertaining family or friends!

After the fireplace was complete, they moved on to landscaping.

“Saved us at least $3000, but not sure if we’ll ever attempt anything like this ourselves again. We’re about 95% done with the landscaping; 4-pallets moss-rock (12,000lbs), 12yds bank-sand, 6yd top-soil mix & 60 plants; tomorrow~10 more plants /shrubs & 4yd black mulch. We’ll be ready for spring swimming very soon”!

Dice is waiting patiently.

It’s rare to have a build go so smoothly. The pool turned out great, and the process seemed quick and painless. Congratulations to this Texas family as well as Ultimate Pools & Spa for such an awesome build!

“I think we let the landscaping get out of hand. But we did get a few unlucky teenagers who slept over; they weren’t expecting to wake up to tons of rock and 10+yds of dirt.”

We love the addition of the umbrella on the tanning ledge!
